Patù was founded on the ruins of the ancient town of Vereto after it was destroyed by the Moors. It is situated in the south of the Salento peninsula, only a few kilometres from famed tourist resorts such as Santa Maria di Leuca (farthest tip of the Salento peninsula and the divide between the Adriatic and Ionic waters) and Salve, a seaside resort with spectacular sand beaches. Because of its outstanding natural landscapes featuring the Mediterranean scrub, Patù is a protected natural area.
